Dreaming a Future

Expanding horizons and empowering students to dream big, regardless of their background

Breaking barriers: tackling educational inequalities

Important educational inequalities persist based on economic, social and geographical origins. Students from Seine-Saint-Denis, one of the lowest-income departments in France, often face significant disadvantages when it comes to education. Limited resources and self-censorship restrict their study and career aspirations. It is therefore critical to empower them with all the knowledge they need to have a perspective for the future, a desire to go further in their learning, and to break free from the obstacles or self-censorship they may impose on themselves due to the fact that they come from diverse backgrounds and working-class suburban neighborhoods.

A vibrant advocate for equitable opportunities, Samia Essabaa, an English teacher and the President of the French association Agir pour Apprendre (“Learning through Action”), aims to bridge this gap and broaden the horizons of students enrolled in the Théodore Monod vocational high school through meaningful field trips, inspiring them to dream bigger for their future, prepare for their diploma and beyond, and become responsible citizens. Based on her recurring experience, students who carry a project indeed largely succeed, obtain their diplomas, and either enter the workforce or continue their studies.

Dream it, see it, achieve it: an immersive learning experience

As part of the Dreaming a Future project supported by La Fondation Dassault Systèmes, in May 2024, the association organized a trip to Toulon, in the south of France, for 16 students enrolled in the Electromechanics vocational program at the Lycée Théodore Monod in Noisy-le-Sec, in the Paris suburb. Many of these students come from economically underprivileged backgrounds, with some living in precarious situations and single-parent households. The goal was to expose them to inspiring professional environments and broaden their understanding of potential career paths beyond the traditional construction and transport industries, while allowing them to experience first-hand what excellence means in these particular fields.

The students visited the brand new Oreca factory, a renowned leader in the design and manufacturing of racing cars, where they met engineers and discussed commitment and teamwork with managers. They also visited the FORMED Campus for maritime training, engaging in immersive VR experiences and learning about piloting robots for painting and welding. They toured the Ifremer facility, the French Research Institute for marine science entirely dedicated to the ocean, where they visited the underwater robotics hall and a research vessel, and interacted with scientists and engineers.

From inspiration to action: the power of experiential learning

In addition to this trip, the students also came to the 3DS Paris Campus where they met with Dassault Systèmes volunteers who will mentor them providing role models, sharing personal experiences, and offering guidance through their final exams and beyond.

The Dreaming a Future project demonstrates the power of experiential learning in motivating students and fostering their aspirations. By exposing them to diverse and inspiring professional settings, the project empowers students to overcome preconceived limitations and envision a brighter future for themselves.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development

Adopted by all United Nations Member States, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries - developed and developing - in a global partnership. La Fondation Dassault Systèmes supports Agir pour Apprendre with the Dreaming a Future program, meeting four of these goals: Quality education, Reduced inequalities, Decent Work and Economic Growth, and Partnerships for the goals.
